Panama is not the most well known whitewater rafting destination in Central, but those familar with Panama, regard it to be the best.
In West Panama near the Costa Rican border, the Chiriqui River and the Chiriqui Viejo River are the two main rivers used for rafting, which range from categories III-V. Both rivers are scenic rides through forests, by sheer rock walls and with waterfalls nearby.
There are rafting experiences for every class, for the pros and for the family. Nine members of our family ages 11-52 enjoyed an totally enjoyable rafting trip on the Chiriqui Viejo river (nothing scary) only great outdoor family fun. Here are some comments from another family:
Our first experience at "white water rafting" on the Chiriquí river with Hector Sanchez and this company Chiriqui River Rafting was all we were hoping for and more.
The experience was thrilling, the scenery great and our concerns about safety more than adequately met due to the first class equipment and skill and experience of Hector and his great team. For the McCoy family with wife Rosalind, daughter Tamira (8) and son Timothy (6) this was definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Boquete/Chiriquí Province".
Outside of Chiriqui province, you can raft on the historic Chagres River near Panama City and as well as several few rivers in the province of Cocle near El Valle de Anton. Aventuras Panama (see our tour operators page) offers several rafting tours outside of Chiriqui including:
Chagres: Pristine Jungle Expedition, Class II-III
Mamoni: Fun and closeness to the city, Class III-IV
Grande: Amazing rocky canyons, Class II-III
Boqueron: great for family with childrens and seniors, Class II
